           Learning to swim is a key layer of protection for those with an autism spectrum diagnosis. Together, we can help autistic swimmers to become safer and as independent as possible in the water, by working with them to achieve swim skill benchmarks.

           Water safety for swimmers who have an ASD diagnosis

           In the US drowning takes an average of 3,500-4,000 lives per year. That is an average of 10 fatal drownings per day (
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           ). Sadly, the statistics are all too familiar. According to 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           , drowning is the leading cause of death for children who have an ASD diagnosis, responsible for approximately 90% of deaths as a result of wandering or bolting, in children under 14.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div&gt;&#xD;

           As an Adaptive Swim Instructor, it is critical to gain effective skills in how to teach kids who have an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis, by using the right approach, tools, and techniques to help improve the outcomes for this vulnerable population. Arming your swim instructors with a toolbox of adaptive aquatic strategies will help them assess and identify swim obstacles and implement effective teaching techniques in their very next swim lesson.

           Why do individuals with an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis have a higher risk of drowning?
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h4&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           We have found that 4 main factors contribute to the increased risk of drowning for children on the autism spectrum:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;ol&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
        
            Wandering or Bolting
           &#xD;
      &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            A characteristic of those on the autism spectrum is that they can be impulsive and this contributes to them being unsafe around water.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
        
            Attraction
           &#xD;
      &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
        
            They are attracted to the glistening light and movement of the water and love the experience of feeling the water surrounding their body
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
        
            Lack of Experience
           &#xD;
      &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Often drowning anxiety from parents/caregivers, leads to an avoidance of water or an individual’s behavioral challenges, or fear of the water, can lead to ‘putting off’ swimming lessons.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
        
            Lack of training
           &#xD;
      &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Parents often experience challenges in finding swim instructors with the specialized training necessary to be able to teach their child how to swim.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;

           Why an individualized approach to swim lessons is important

           When teaching an individual on the autism spectrum, it is important to note that this population is uniquely diverse. There is a broad spectrum of characteristics, unique to each individual which requires a personalized approach for every swimmer.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Some swimmers will seek out the water and want to splash, submerge and constantly move. Other swimmers will avoid the water and be reactive, rigid, and difficult to engage.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div&gt;&#xD;

           . We categorized it as a drowning prevention concept because we need 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           all
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
            swimmers with an autism spectrum diagnosis to be able to touch and hold rescue equipment in an emergency situation.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The Swim Instructor must be open-minded to the range of their swimmer’s needs. Flexibility within a swim lesson plan for a swimmer with autism is the best approach, as each swimmer will have different cognitive, behavioral, and sensory processing responses. Taking action to learn the safety skills, while also allowing the swimmer to have some control over the activities, will help to improve the overall lesson.
           &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;

           Step One: Know your swimmer
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h4&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The first step is about understanding each of your swimmer’s unique needs which will inform your decisions about how to progress your lesson, to achieve the swim goal. Offering flexibility within your lesson plan will require self-awareness so that you are weaving in and out of your lesson plan, while at the same time keeping the swimmer engaged.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Before you give your first lesson to an individual on the autism spectrum, ask the parents/caregiver to fill out a questionnaire (intake form) and talk with them to find out about how their child learns best, to help you be better prepared for the swimmer’s specific needs.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Ask questions such as:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;ul&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            How does your child communicate?
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Do they have any behaviors that need to be managed in a certain way?
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Do they use pictures or a social story to aid in transitions and expectations?
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Do they have any precautions or medical issues we should be aware of, such as seizures?
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Do they like the bath?
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Do they let you wash their hair?
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            What are your child’s specific likes and dislikes?
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            What motivates them?
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/ul&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           If you don’t understand the individual you are with, you won’t be able to give them what they need during their adaptive swim lesson.
           &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;

           Step Two: Flexibility with your teaching style

      <title>How to Ensure Your Swimmers Aren't Moving Up Too Fast</title>

            Everyone loves to see swimmers advance, ring the cowbell (or gong or whatever your program uses to celebrate), and receive a sticker on their certificate. But a speedy move up isn't always best for the swimmer. Especially if they don't have a lesson every day. Here's some ideas to keep your kiddos advancing steadily.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           1. Use a Double Check System
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           If your Coaches are able to move swimmers up when they feel they’re ready, start having Coaches call you or your Site Supervisor(s) over to watch the swimmer perform the advancement goals. This way there are multiple perspectives watching the swimmer. There may be something you or your Site Supervisor can see from above that your Coach cannot see from in the water.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           2. Test Twice
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Have swimmers perform the same advancement goals on two different days. The first day the swimmer is able to complete the goal, congratulate them and allow them to move up to the next station. The following lesson, have the swimmer show the skills again. If they’re successful, it shows they’ve retained the information and once the lesson is over, they can get a sticker on their certificate.
           &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           3. Use Longer Distances
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           This becomes more applicable from Station 3 and on. If you want to ensure swimmers have a true grasp on the concept, have them kick or swim 5 more feet than normal. Or, for example, in Station 7, have the swimmer complete 3 legal breaststroke kicks in a row in addition to the other advancement goals. Tweak the advancement goals to meet your needs.
           &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           4. Train Coaches &amp;amp; Site Supervisors Often
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           While all the above options are possible solutions, nothing will beat continuous training for your Coaches and Site Supervisors. If you notice there’s a specific station or two that are continuously being passed through quickly, spend a training day talking about all the ins and outs of the station, and what Coaches could do to ensure swimmers fully understand the station criteria before they complete the advancement goals.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Not all of these methods may work for you and your program, so it’s important to ensure lesson quality among all staff so that your students are becoming safer swimmers. Don’t be afraid to have students repeat advancement goals to make sure they’re truly ready to move up to the next station.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;

           Lloyd Bridges closed every episode of the popular television drama "Sea Hunt" by declaring that "over two-thirds of the world's surface is covered by water." It is inevitable that most people will be exposed to at least one form of aquatic activity at some point in their life. The ability to swim is the most important safety skill of all. According to the National Safety Council, over 8,000 people drown in the United States every year. If more people knew how to swim there would be fewer drownings.

           Since President John F. Kennedy established the "President's Council on Physical Fitness" in the early 1960's, America has been on a fitness kick. People of all ages have been encouraged to participate in a wide variety of physical activities to maintain at least basic levels of fitness, thereby prolonging and enhancing life. Statistics indicate year after year that swimming ranks #1 among all participant recreational activities. Swimming has long been recognized as the most complete form of exercise, developing cardiovascular, skeletal, and neuromuscular fitness.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;

           3. Opportunity &amp;amp; Fun

           Learning to swim means acquiring a skill level which permits participation in a wide variety of recreational and competitive aquatic activities. Opportunities include competitive swim racing which is organized to provide excitement for children and adults alike. There is long-distance swimming, triathlon, springboard and platform diving, water polo, synchronized swimming, and scuba diving. Activities such as boartin, water skiing, surfing, sailing, canoeing, and fishing are made less hazardous when its participants can remove themselves from danger if the unexpected should occur.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
